STEM

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering andMath. “STEM Education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts arecoupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering and math in contexts thatmake connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development ofSTEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy (Tsupros, 2009)”.

Hellenic American Academy has begun to implement a STEM program over the last couple of years, by introducing theInteractive Science Program for grades 5-6 and expanding that program to grades 2 through 6.

Each week students in grades 6 perform hands on experiments in the science lab.Lab reports using the Scientific Method of Inquiry following a Rubric that incorporates Math, Language Artsand Computer Technology. As applicable, weincorporate math problem solving skills into science problems.

We have also implemented STEM – 5E teaching. The 5 E’s are Engagement, Evaluation, Exploration, Elaboration and Explanation to engage, explore and elaborate on lessons with the children and not just lecture them.
